SCOTT WILLIS LEGACY FOUNDATION

BEANS & BREAD FOOD PROGRAM

Since first visiting Africa in 2017, we continue to learn how to better serve vulnerable children with each trip. Education is the way out of poverty and while Scott’s Legacy has helped build schools and fund scholarships, children cannot learn if they are hungry. This was evident during our last visit. As we delivered new Connor’s Toy Boxes or restocked previously delivered toy boxes, each orphanage told us that their greatest worry was food insecurity. During the visit, we provided funds to help. We knew there had to be a way to make sure that these children got the food they needed and that those caring for them did not worry every day if tomorrow would be the day that there was no food.

With the help of our partner in Tanzania, Kunda Molla, we have established an ongoing food program that will provide one 240 lb bag of maize and two 250 lb bags of beans to be delivered each month to the 19 orphanages that we support as well as NASA Nursery School and Flamboyant School in Zambia.

The students at St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Kingsville, MD raised funds to help Scott’s Legacy for the second year in a row. You may remember that they raised the funds in 2023 to provide Shoes that Grow and school supplies to the children at NASA Nursery School. After hearing of the need for food, this year they raised the funds to provide maize and beans to the children of Kindness Orphanage for a year!

You will see photos of the children and staff at Kindness Orphanage with the first monthly delivery of maize and beans. They are proudly wearing St. Paul Eagle T-shirts and are so grateful for the children who live over 7500 miles away for caring about them. Scott’s cousin Jamie, her husband Brian and children Brooke and Gavin donated the funds to provide food for NASA Nursery School for a year. With one orphanage and one school covered we just had 19 more to go! On September 5, 2024 we started the campaign to raise $30,240 to feed the children. The Kevin Myers Family Foundation, who provided the bus for Flamboyant Special School and matched the funds to provide clean water to NASA Nursery School, matched funds up to $15,000 for this program.

On October 2, 2024, less than a month from when Scott’s Legacy launched this campaign, we met and exceed our goal of 756 bags of maize and beans. Now, for the next 12 months, the children in 19 orphanages and 2 schools will have the food they need.

Whether you donated, shared the request with friends, family or business that helped or just wished us well, we appreciate your support!
