SCOTT’S LEGACY SCHOLARS
Education is the path out of poverty. Scott’s Legacy currently supports the education and living needs of 21 children. Eleven of these children are from Shades of Hope Academy. Ten of these children are from Mama Jane’s Orphanage including Bernard, Daniel and Ruth who are attending college and living on campus, Baraka, Naomi and Jenifer who are in Form 6 and Angel, Tessa, Rita and Rahely who are in Form 5. These children are living at their schools during the academic year. We are proud of these children for excelling in their studies. Students are required to pass government tests after Form 4 in order to continue their education. Many children, especially orphans who started off at a disadvantage, are unable to continue.
The Scott Willis
Memorial Scholarship
In memory of Scott, this scholarship is funded by Diane Hock and Russell Shea to be utilized for emergency education funding. In previous years, the scholarship has supported two young women living in the village near Shades of Hope School: Irene, a 14-year-old girl who lost her funding to finish school when her grandmother could no longer support her; and Marry, an 18-year-old attending Severin College where she learned a trade to support herself. In 2022, 2023 and 2024, the scholarship helped educational costs for the children at Mama Jane’s Orphanage.
The Charles Calvert
Memorial Scholarship
The Charles Calvert Memorial Scholarship is being funded by Scott's grandmother, Barbara Hock, established to honor the memory of Barbara's brother who died in 2012. In 2022 and 2023, this scholarship helped to support the educational endeavors of the older children at Mama Jane’s Orphanage. In 2024, this scholarship is supporting Bernard, one of three children at Mama Jane’s that is currently attending University.
The Wohlfort Family Scholarship
The Wohlfort Family Scholarship was established by Bonnie & Phil Wohlfort with their children, Jamie (husband Brian; children Brooke & Gavin), and Allie (husband Will; daughter Madison) and Greg (wife Abby). The Wohlfort family supports Baraka’s education, medical, uniforms, books, food, and clothing. We know he will become great friends one day with Brooke, Gavin and Maddie.
The Olivia & James Boddicker Family Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Olivia & James Boddicker and their daughters, Rosie and Ruthie. The Boddickers have been amazing supporters of Scott’s Legacy and are very happy to support student Lawrence, a precious boy who lives at Shades of Hope School with his brothers, Yohanna and Shadreck. James’ mother, Lisa, met Lawrence when she traveled to Tanzania with Scott’s Legacy in May 2023. It was the highlight of her trip. We know that Rosie and Ruthie will love getting to know Lawrence.
The Dewalt Family
Scholarship
The Dewalt Family Scholarship is funded by Scott’s Aunt Kim, Uncle Matt Dewalt and their daughters, Peyton and Riley. The Dewalts sponsor student Yvonne. Kim met Yvonne when she visited Shades of Hope in May 2019 and the pair quickly bonded. Yvonne loved looking at Kim’s photos and was excited to learn she has two sisters and a dog in America. Kim was able to visit Yvonne again this year and can’t wait to take her husband and daughters to meet her on our next trip.
The Sergeant Family Scholarship
The Sergeant Family Scholarship was established by Cate & John Sergeant to support student Shadrack. Shadrack is a happy and healthy 8-year-old living at Shades of Hope with his brothers, Lawrence and Yohana. This scholarship will fund his education, uniforms, books, boarding, food, clothing, and healthcare. The Sergeants’ children, Graham & Laurel, will have fun getting to know their “brother” in Tanzania.
The Mosca Family
Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Phyliss & Vito Mosca in memory of Vito’s brother, Massimo, who passed in 2007. The Mosca family funds the education, uniforms, books, food and medical care for Yohanna who came to Shades of Hope at 6-years-old with his brothers, Shadrack and Lawrence. Yohanna is now a healthy, fun-loving and smart 12-year-old who feels happy to be a part of the Mosca family. The Moscas wants him to know they are as happy to add him to their family!
The Willis Five
Scholarship
The Willis Five Scholarship is funded on behalf of the five Willis grandchildren, supporting student Hamima at Shades of Hope School. Co-founders Kate and Diane met Hamima when they visited Africa the first time in 2017. She made such an impression on them, they knew they wanted her to be a special part of their family. She is provided an education, clothing, medical, and personal needs and is now 13-years-old. We look forward to the day when Hamima can meet the Willis grandchildren on a future trip to Africa.
Nancy Rosenstadt
Memorial Scholarship
Our dear friend Susan Skiles funded the Nancy Rosenstadt Memorial Scholarship, supporting Lulu at Shades of Hope School. Lulu lives at the school with her brother Baraka (pictured top). Susan’s generosity will provide an education, food, clothing, medical, and personal needs. Susan met Lulu when she visited Shades of Hope in May 2019, with her granddaughter, Acadia. Susan and Acadia returned to Tanzania in May 2023 with Susan’s grandson / Acadia’s brother, Ellis. Nancy would be very proud of Susan for honoring her.
Anna & Rick’s Scholarship
Anna and Rick are sponsoring Najima’s education; 12 year-old Najima came to Shades of Hope when her family could no longer support her because of her medical needs. Anna and Rick plan to visit Najima one day so they can all meet in person.
The Anderson Family Scholarship
The Anderson Family Scholarship is funded by Brady Anderson and his daughter Brianna. Brady and Brianna are sponsoring Elishadai, a handsome 11-year-old abandoned by his mother at age. He and his grandfather lived on the street until he went to Shades of Hope in 2019. Brianna is excited to communicate with Elishadai and welcome this “little brother” to her family.
The Azevedo Family Scholarship
There was an instant connection when Scott’s Aunt Suzy, Uncle Tom and cousin Luke Azevedo met Elisha for the first time during their visit to Shades of Hope. Alhough there was a language barrier, the little boy knew he had found a family to love and support him - he was full of joy. We’re sure he cannot wait to meet his brother Eric one day.
The Hladki & Moghadaspour Families Scholarship
When Becky and Carmela visited Shades of Hope, they didn’t know they would be changing the life of a shy little boy named Richard Patrick. It didn’t take long for Richard to smile when he met these wonderful ladies. Both extended families are so excited about being part of Richard’s life. Becky introduced Richard Patrick to her niece Lauren when they travel with Scott’s Legacy in May 2023.
