Flamboyant Special School

Sister Claude and Sister Paul are Irish Sisters of Mercy who remain a very special part of our family’s life - they always have been. They worked for 30 years at Saint Clare’s School (where we attended) in Essex, Maryland, before returning to Ireland. Sister Claude then left for Africa where she developed the Linda School. In 2012, she began to help her friends, Sister Andrea and Sister Angela, in the development of Flamboyant Special School for special needs children.

Sister “Claudia” (as they call her in Africa) is in Zambia. We asked, How can we help? Since the children there are in desperate need of new uniforms, that’s where we stepped in to fill a need. Each child now has a new uniform with accessories. The uniform truly helps these special needs children to feel a part of their school – a place they belong. It also provides them with much needed clothing!

Flamboyant educates 84 boys and girls with a wide range of physical and medical needs. There, Scott’s Legacy supports Karen’s Play Park (in memory of Scott’s aunt, Karen Hock Springston) and Scotty’s Garden. Sister Paul generously purchased a wheelchair in Scott’s memory for a small boy. We have seen firsthand, from both of them, what a difference our support makes.

We are grateful to everyone who donated and could not have done this project without the supporters listed below.

Asante sana … thank you.

Delilah's Music Box

We are so blessed to share with you our latest project at Flamboyant Special School in Mazabuka, Zambia. Friends of Kym & Vernon Simmons asked that we create a program in memory of their precious daughter, Delilah. At birth, Delilah was diagnosed with a rare chromosomal disorder with a life expectancy of six weeks. Kym and Vernon took her home on hospice care. Not only did Delilah defy the odds, she lived a beautiful life in the care of her parents, her older brother, Ellis, and the support of family and friends. Delilah became an angel just shy of her 14th birthday.

Please take time to read the tribute to this angel - an amazing story
of a life that brought joy and happiness to everyone.

Because Delilah loved music, we knew instantly that her passion for music would bring joy to the special needs children at Flamboyant. Because we know the happiness that another of our projects, Connor’s Toy Boxes, brings to so many, we asked Brother Jose at Flamboyant to work with the older students to construct a music box in Delilah’s memory. “Delilah’s Music Box” box houses musical instruments - purchased and handmade by the children. It is now a special part of the school’s music program and all students get to use and enjoy the instruments.

Watch the video below of the children playing music in school.
You may notice the beautiful uniforms that many of you
purchased in honor or memory of someone!
